How to Safely Do a 12V Reset on a Silverado EV or Sierra EV

If your Chevrolet Silverado EV or GMC Sierra EV is acting strange, infotainment glitches, modules not waking up correctly, odd warning messages, or other software-related behavior you may have heard people suggest doing a “12V reset” by disconnecting the negative battery cable.

I myself have suggested this on numerous occasions to help resolve issues.  This procedure needs to be done carefully however and it is not without risk.  I am creating this blog post to clearly outline the available guidance from GM and outline the potential risks as well as the correct procedure per GM.

There is GM service-bulletin language that references a 12V negative-cable disconnect/reset on Silverado EV, Sierra EV, and other GM EVs, but there is an important catch: GM warns not to disconnect the 12V battery while Battery Maintenance Mode is active. GM also warns not to disconnect the battery sensor directly from the negative battery post or its connector.

So if you’re going to do this, the goal is not just to disconnect the battery, it’s to do it safely and correctly.

Why the Silverado & Sierra EV 12V Reset Needs Extra Caution

On the Silverado & Sierra EV, the high-voltage system can continue maintaining the 12V battery even with the truck off. GM says Battery Maintenance Mode can be active with the ignition off, whether the charge cord is plugged in or not. When that mode is active, disconnecting the battery cables may create a risk of electrical shock or hot cable leads. Source

GM also gives a practical way to check for this condition: with the vehicle off, measure the 12V battery using a digital multimeter. If the reading is 13.5 volts or higher, GM says Battery Maintenance Mode is active, and you should wait for the T18 battery charger to deactivate before disconnecting the negative cable. Source

Tools You’ll Need

  • Digital multimeter
  • Proper hand tools for the negative cable disconnect point
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves
  • A safe, dry place to work

I also recommend keeping the key fob away from the truck once you begin the reset procedure so the vehicle is less likely to wake up unexpectedly. GM specifically references removing the keyless transmitter from the vehicle and placing it about 10 feet away during one of its manual reset procedures. Source

Before You Start

Before doing any 12V reset on a Silverado EV or Sierra EV:

  1. Park the truck safely.
  2. Put it fully in OFF mode.
  3. Unplug any charging equipment if connected.
  4. Open what you need before beginning so you do not have to wake the truck back up unnecessarily.
  5. Have your multimeter ready.

One more important point: GM says the Battery Sensor Module should stay attached to the negative stud and connector unless the battery or sensor itself is being replaced. The disconnect should be made at the approved point in the negative cable path, not by unplugging or removing the battery sensor from the post. Source

How to Check Whether Battery Maintenance Mode Is Active

This is the biggest safety step.

Step 1: Confirm the truck is OFF

Make sure the vehicle is not in Ready mode and is fully shut down. GM’s bulletin says to ensure the ignition is OFF before checking the 12V battery. Source

Step 2: Measure 12V battery voltage

Using a digital multimeter, check the 12V battery voltage.

Step 3: Interpret the reading

  • 13.5V or above: GM says Battery Maintenance Mode is active. Do not disconnect the negative cable yet. Source
  • Below 13.5V: That suggests Battery Maintenance Mode is not active, and you can proceed carefully.

Step 4: If voltage is 13.5V or higher, wait

If the voltage is 13.5V or higher, wait for the truck’s 12V charging activity to stop, then re-check the voltage. GM’s bulletin says to wait for the T18 Battery Charger to deactivate before disconnecting the negative cable. Source

Safe Silverado & Sierra EV 12V Reset Procedure

Once you’ve verified Battery Maintenance Mode is not active:

Step 1: Keep the truck OFF and keep it asleep

Make sure the truck is off, and keep the key fob away from the vehicle.

Step 2: Disconnect at the correct negative-cable point

Follow the Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection procedure for the truck. The key point from GM’s bulletin is this: do not disconnect the Battery Sensor Module from the negative battery post or unplug its connector. Disconnect only at the approved point in the negative cable path downstream of the sensor. Source

Step 3: Leave it disconnected briefly

One GM bulletin says to perform an EV global reset by disconnecting the 12V battery negative cable for 1 minute. Source

For a simple reset, 1 minute disconnected is the clearest public-bulletin guidance.

Step 4: Reconnect the negative cable

Reconnect the cable at the same approved disconnect point, making sure everything is secure.

Step 5: Power the truck back up

After reconnecting, start the truck normally and check for:

  • warning lights
  • infotainment behavior
  • charging behavior
  • module wake-up issues
  • any persistent fault messages

Why You Should Not Pull the Sensor Off the Battery Post

This is worth repeating because it is easy to get wrong.

GM says unplugging the Battery Sensor connector or removing it from the negative battery post can reset the learn status of the sensor. An unlearned Battery Sensor Module can then report inaccurate state-of-charge information. GM specifically says the sensor should remain attached unless it is actually being replaced. Source

In plain English: disconnect the cable the right way, not by disturbing the sensor assembly itself.

What GM’s Other “Manual Reset” Procedure Says

There is another GM bulletin that references a more elaborate manual reset process tied to battery energy control module programming. In that procedure, GM says to:

  • perform the Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection procedure,
  • wait 15 minutes,
  • reconnect,
  • place the vehicle in Propulsion Ready mode for 10 seconds,
  • turn it off,
  • remove the keyless transmitter about 10 feet away,
  • wait 15 minutes,
  • then repeat the process for a total of 2 times. Source

That procedure appears tied to a specific service/programming context, not a general owner reset for everyday glitches. In most cases, I would not use that as the default reset method.

When a 12V Reset Might Help

A 12V reset may be worth trying for issues that seem software-related, that are not fixed by the soft reset procedure of holding down the end call button on the steering wheel until the infotainment screen reboots, such as:

  • infotainment oddities
  • modules not behaving normally after an update
  • temporary communication glitches
  • systems that do not seem to fully reboot on their own

But if you have:

  • a no-start condition
  • repeated warning lights
  • charging faults
  • propulsion errors
  • anything safety-related

then a simple 12V reset may not be the right fix. GM’s bulletins often place these reset steps inside larger diagnostic workflows, not as standalone repair advice. Source

Final Thoughts

Yes, there is public GM bulletin language supporting a 12V negative-cable reset on Silverado EVs. But the important part is doing it safely:

  • make sure the truck is off,
  • check 12V voltage first,
  • do not disconnect if voltage is 13.5V or above,
  • wait for Battery Maintenance Mode to stop,
  • disconnect at the approved negative-cable point,
  • and do not remove or unplug the battery sensor module from the negative post.

Done correctly, this may help reboot stubborn modules or clear odd software behavior. Done incorrectly, it can create additional problems or even safety risk.
