Rivian R2 Launches June 9th | What Reservation Holders Need To Know
Share
The Rivian R2 launch is finally here, and June 9, 2026, is the day the R2 rollout officially begins for reservation holders. If you've been sitting on that reservation, here's exactly what you need to know.
The Date Is Official
Rivian confirmed June 9 as the R2 launch date via email to reservation holders, a post on X, and an official "Rivian Story" blog post. On that single day, three things happen simultaneously:
1. Order invitations begin rolling out to reservation holders
2. Demo drives open at Rivian retail locations
3. First US deliveries start hitting driveways

How Order Invitations Work
Your reservation timing matters, but it is not the only factor. Rivian says reservation timestamp and delivery location are the primary factors, with a few other considerations also playing a role:
• Reservation timestamp (earlier = better, obviously)
• Delivery location, especially proximity to Rivian Service + Demo Centers
• Whether you're already a Rivian owner (existing customers get priority)
• Active lease ending dates (R1/R1S lessees moving up get preference)
• Random selection (yes, luck plays a role)
Rivian has explicitly stated that only a fraction of reservation holders will receive invitations on Day 1. Don't panic if your inbox stays quiet on June 9, invitations continue rolling out in waves over the following weeks.
Timing: When Do You Actually Get Your Vehicle?
If you receive an order invitation on June 9, Rivian says delivery is expected within 2–6 weeks after order confirmation, so even early invite holders should not assume immediate delivery. Most early deliveries land in July and August.
The 2026 production target from Rivian's Normal, Illinois plant is roughly 20,000–25,000 units, running on a single shift initially. A second shift ramps in the second half of the year.
Pricing: The $45,000 Number You Keep Seeing
Here's the honest truth: the $45,000 starting price is for a future base model, not the Launch Edition.
The Launch Edition (the first production version) comes with dual-motor AWD standard and starts at $57,990 before taxes and fees. Rivian has not announced a single-motor Launch Edition variant.
The R2 Premium arrives later in 2026, also with dual-motor AWD, starting at $53,990 before taxes and fees. The $45,000 target applies to a base single-motor R2 that arrives later in 2027.
Performance & Range Specs

| Spec | Performance (21" wheels) | Performance (20" A/T wheels) |
|---|---|---|
| Power | 656 hp / 609 lb-ft | 656 hp / 609 lb-ft |
| Drive | Dual-motor AWD | Dual-motor AWD |
| 0–60 mph | 3.6 seconds | 3.6 seconds |
| EPA Range | 330 miles | 307 miles |
| Efficiency | 105 MPGe | 99 MPGe |
| Ground Clearance | 9.6 inches | 9.6 inches |
| Battery | 87 kWh (estimated), 4695 cell format, structural pack | Same |
| Suspension | Steel coil springs, semi-active dampers | Same |
The R2 Performance is reportedly around 800 pounds heavier than a comparable Model Y, yet its 330-mile EPA range edges out the latest Model Y AWD rating while matching it at 105 MPGe. That is impressive for a boxier, taller SUV, though the 20-inch all-terrain tire option drops range to 307 miles.
What's in the Box (or, What's Not)
Included at launch:
• 11 cameras, 5 radar units for the universal Hands-free system
• Full-width LED light bar
• Dual-zone climate, digital driver display, large central touchscreen
• Front trunk (frunk) with deep molded storage
Coming later:
• Lidar sensors (not in initial Launch Edition)
Future autonomy hardware: Rivian has discussed next-generation autonomy hardware, including custom silicon and lidar, but early R2 Launch Package vehicles should be understood as launching with the hardware listed for current Autonomy+ features, not promised future Level 3 capability.
Launch Package Value
From a value standpoint, the R2 Performance with Launch Package includes a few items that could reduce add-on costs later. Rivian includes the tow package, lifetime access to Autonomy+, and a special Rivian Green anodized key fob as part of the package.
Buyers also get access to Launch Green as an exclusive exterior color option, although Rivian lists that paint color as a paid upgrade. The biggest value item is Autonomy+, because Rivian says the feature remains available for the lifetime of feature support for the vehicle’s hardware and stays with the vehicle if it is sold.
So while the Launch Package is still the higher-content early version of R2, some of what is included may help offset costs that later R2 buyers could have to add separately.
What Should Reservation Holders Do Now?
1. Check your email: Rivian's launch confirmation email is the source of truth for your invite window.
2. Confirm your contact info & delivery address in Rivian's reservation portal is current.
3. Research demo drive locations: Rivian retail spots will host launch events
4. Don’t cancel existing EV commitments just because June 9 is here. An invite is not the same thing as a delivery, and Rivian says delivery can take 2–6 weeks after order confirmation. Since invites are rolling out in waves, many reservation holders may still have a meaningful wait before their R2 arrives.
5. Insurance prep: before you order, get a quote on the R2 Performance. With 656 hp, a higher starting price, and newer EV repair costs, insurance could be a meaningful part of the monthly ownership cost. It is always better to know that before you commit.

Why This Matters Beyond Your Driveway
The R2 is Rivian's path to profitability. The brand built credibility with the premium R1S and R1T, but this compact SUV is meant to be the volume seller and the model that pushes Rivian from a niche player into real-scale competition with Tesla.
June 9 is the start of Rivian’s next major chapter. If R2 delivers on its promise, it has the potential to move Rivian from a premium EV brand with a passionate following into a much more mainstream player.
