I Drove the Rivian R2 as a Regular Customer. Here’s My Honest Review

The Rivian R2 reviewed in this article was an early-production vehicle running an early software build. Features, prices, specifications, and availability may change as Rivian continues developing the R2 lineup.  I did two demo drives on two different days with two different launch edition R2 vehicles.  The only difference between the two was color and tires.

I recently drove an early-production Rivian R2 Performance in Orlando, Florida, and my biggest takeaway was simple:

The R2 already feels like a very good vehicle. Whether it becomes a major success will depend on how consistently Rivian can build it, service it, and price it.

The R2 felt solid, comfortable, extremely quick, and more refined than I expected from such an early-production model. Its ride quality, steering, seats, and climate-control performance were among the strongest parts of the experience.

It was not perfect.

The vehicle had a few fit-and-finish problems, several software features were not yet active, and the lack of a third row could become a meaningful disadvantage against competitors such as the Tesla Model Y L.

There is also an important hardware decision facing early buyers. The first R2 vehicles use Rivian’s current autonomy platform, while Rivian has confirmed that future R2 models will introduce its next-generation autonomy computer, proprietary silicon, and LiDAR.

That means the answer to whether you should buy an R2 now or wait depends heavily on how long you intend to keep it, which configuration you want, how much you value future driver-assistance development, and how patient you are willing to be with a brand-new vehicle platform.

How I Tested the Rivian R2

This was a limited public demo drive, not a weeklong loan or a long-term ownership test.

I drove the vehicle on public roads in the Orlando area and evaluated the areas that can reasonably be assessed during a demo appointment:

  • Interior comfort and driving position
  • Air-conditioning performance
  • Low-speed and merging acceleration
  • Ride quality and body control
  • Steering and general drivability
  • Driver-assistance operation
  • Blind-spot cameras and displays
  • Software usability
  • Exterior fit and finish
  • Front trunk and rear hatch operation

I did not conduct instrumented acceleration testing, range testing, DC fast-charging testing, towing, off-road driving, efficiency testing, or a detailed cargo-capacity measurement.

Those limitations matter. A demo drive can reveal a great deal about a vehicle’s basic design, but it cannot replace living with that vehicle over several weeks or months.

Why I Reviewed the R2 as a Regular Customer

I deliberately booked this demo drive through Rivian’s public website rather than approaching it as a traditional media event.

I had previously requested R2 access through Rivian for content purposes. I later decided that experiencing the vehicle through the normal customer process would produce a more useful article.

I wanted to answer a straightforward question:

What would an ordinary reservation holder or prospective buyer experience after scheduling a Rivian R2 demo drive and arriving at a local Rivian location?

There was no controlled media route, no specially selected review vehicle, and no company representative directing every part of the drive.

It was just me, an early-production R2, and the same basic demo process offered to other prospective customers.

Why Independence Matters in Automotive Coverage

One issue that can influence automotive coverage is the pressure to preserve manufacturer access.

Large media outlets and content creators often depend on automakers for early vehicles, launch invitations, interviews, travel opportunities, and future access. That can create pressure, whether intentional or not, to avoid being overly critical.

I am not suggesting that other reviewers are dishonest. I am saying that access is a real consideration, and it can affect how aggressively someone discusses a company’s weaknesses.

That is not what I want EV Outdoors to become.

If a vehicle is excellent, I will say that. If something needs improvement, I will say that too.

The last thing I want is for a family member, friend, subscriber, or reader to spend tens of thousands of dollars and later feel that my coverage misled them.

My History With Rivian

I have followed Rivian since approximately 2018 or 2019, when the company began introducing the R1T and R1S to the public.

My wife and I were excited about what Rivian was building, but we deliberately waited for some of the earliest production problems to be addressed before becoming owners.

I eventually purchased a used Rivian R1T just as the unusually high used-vehicle prices began settling down. My wife also held a pre-price-increase R1S reservation and later took delivery of her vehicle.

I have been a genuine fan of both the products and what the Rivian brand represents.

I am not a hardcore off-roader, but I enjoy camping, traveling, and spending time outdoors. Rivian’s focus on combining electric transportation with outdoor recreation has always appealed to me.

That ownership history also gives me a useful reference point. I was not evaluating the R2 in isolation. I was comparing its seats, software, acceleration, ride quality, controls, and driver-assistance features with Rivian vehicles my family has actually owned and used.

Booking the Rivian R2 Demo Drive in Orlando

I booked the appointment while vacationing in Orlando, Florida.

I used my last initial and contact information that was not connected to my normal Rivian account, although I did use my EV Outdoors email address. It was not exactly an undercover operation, but the employees did not appear to recognize me or treat the appointment as anything other than a normal customer demo.

When I arrived at the Orlando Service and Demo Drive Center, I initially had trouble determining where I was supposed to enter.

The guest parking area was near the service-bay entrances. The closest public-looking entrance led into a customer lounge, but no Rivian staff members were present there.

I eventually exited through the front of the building and walked to the other end, where two Rivian employees greeted me.

This was not a major problem, but clearer directional signs would improve the arrival experience for first-time visitors.

Once I found the correct entrance, the experience improved considerably.

The Rivian employees were polite, friendly, and welcoming. They asked whether this was my first time driving a Rivian. I answered honestly and explained that I had owned multiple Rivian vehicles.

They then asked whether I needed a detailed orientation. I declined because I wanted to determine how intuitive the R2 would feel without someone explaining every control first.

That is an important part of evaluating any modern vehicle. An owner may receive an initial walkthrough, but the controls and interface should still make sense after the advisor walks away.

The R2 Performance I Drove

The vehicle assigned to me was a Half Moon Grey R2 Performance with the Launch Package and all-season wheels and tires.

The Rivian advisor offered to move me into a vehicle with all-terrain tires if that configuration better matched what I planned to purchase.

I thought that was a smart question.

Wheel and tire choices can meaningfully affect range, noise, steering response, and ride quality. A buyer considering an all-terrain configuration should ideally drive one rather than form an opinion entirely from an all-season vehicle.

I chose the all-season version because that is the configuration I would personally be more likely to purchase. For my needs, maximizing range and on-road efficiency would be more important than achieving the most aggressive appearance or off-road capability.

The R2 I drove had not yet received its first major software update. I was therefore evaluating an early software build rather than the experience future owners will necessarily receive.

The Rivian advisor referred to the new interface as Rivian OS 2.0 and said elements of the updated experience would eventually reach newer R1 vehicles.

Some features were not yet active on my demo vehicle. Pet Comfort was unavailable, Rivian Assistant was not operational, and several other areas were clearly still being developed.

I do not consider missing pre-release software features to be a major negative by themselves. Modern electric vehicles can change significantly through over-the-air updates, and early demo vehicles are rarely representative of the final software experience.

However, buyers taking delivery of an early-production vehicle should understand that they may be purchasing both a finished automobile and an evolving software platform.

People who enjoy receiving new features over time may find that exciting. Buyers who expect every advertised capability to work perfectly on delivery day may prefer to wait.

First Impressions Inside the Rivian R2

My first impression after opening the door was how solid the R2 felt.

The doors closed with a reassuring feel, and the cabin did not immediately come across as a visibly cheaper version of the R1.

Rivian has clearly worked to reduce manufacturing cost and complexity, but the R2 still feels like a substantial vehicle rather than an entry-level product.

The front seats were also immediately comfortable. They felt slightly more supple than the seats in our R1S, although I have never considered the R1 seats uncomfortable.

The driving position felt natural, visibility was generally good, and the controls were where I expected them to be.

I had previously sat inside a much earlier R2 at my local Rivian location in Maryland. That vehicle displayed a VIN in approximately the 300 range. The Orlando vehicle appeared to be roughly 1,000 numbers later, although VINs do not always correspond perfectly with production sequence.

One of my concerns with the earlier vehicle involved Rivian’s haptic control wheels on the steering wheel.

On the earlier R2, the controls did not feel as sturdy as I would prefer for something owners may use repeatedly over many years.

The controls in the later Orlando R2 felt more substantial.

I still have questions about their durability over five, seven, or ten years, but the later vehicle eased those concerns somewhat. This may indicate Rivian was already refining the component during early production, although two vehicles are not enough to establish a broad trend.

Testing the R2 Air Conditioning in Florida Heat

The first order of business was cooling the cabin.

Central Florida in July is an ideal place to test an electric vehicle’s climate-control system. The combination of intense heat, humidity, and direct sunlight can quickly expose an underpowered air-conditioning system.

The R2 had been sitting outside, so the interior was extremely warm when I entered.

I found the climate controls and digital vent adjustments easy to understand. It did not take long to aim the airflow where I wanted it and maximize cooling.

Within approximately ten minutes, the cabin was considerably more comfortable.

Based on this experience, the R2’s air-conditioning performance earns an A+ from me. It cooled the cabin effectively in demanding conditions without requiring me to search through multiple menus or struggle with the vent interface.

This may sound like a small detail until you live somewhere with hot summers. Real-world comfort features often matter more during daily ownership than acceleration figures owners may use only occasionally.

How the Rivian R2 Drives

The most impressive part of the demo was the way the vehicle drove.

The R2 Performance uses a semi-active suspension that adapts to road conditions and driver inputs. I drove the vehicle in Sport mode with the suspension set to Firm.

Even in that setting, the ride was not unreasonably harsh.

The R2 remained composed through turns and allowed just enough body movement to communicate what the vehicle was doing without feeling loose or disconnected.

It felt planted and confident when driven in a spirited manner.

This is a difficult balance to achieve in a taller electric SUV. A manufacturer can make the suspension extremely stiff to control the vehicle’s weight, but doing so often creates a tiring ride.

The R2 managed to feel responsive without punishing its occupants over normal road imperfections.

Based on this drive, ride and handling may be among the R2’s strongest attributes. It still feels like a Rivian, but its smaller dimensions make it feel more manageable and responsive than the larger R1S.

Real-World Acceleration Instead of a 0-to-60 Launch

I did not conduct a formal 0-to-60 test.

A controlled acceleration test requires appropriate equipment, a safe location, and repeatable conditions.

Instead, I tested the kind of acceleration owners are more likely to use regularly: merging into traffic.

This was closer to a 20-to-60 or 30-to-60 mph acceleration run than a full launch from a stop.

The R2 Performance pulled me firmly into the seat.

Based on my admittedly unscientific “butt dyno,” it felt slightly stronger than our R1S during a similar rolling-acceleration maneuver.

A full launch from a stop might produce a different comparison, but during ordinary merging acceleration, the R2 felt extremely quick.

That matters more to me than a headline acceleration figure. Drivers use power to merge, pass slower traffic, and enter a busy roadway far more often than they launch from a complete stop.

The R2 provides far more acceleration than most owners will need. More importantly, the power felt immediately available and easy to control.

Blind-Spot Cameras and the Driver Display

The R2 combines traditional blind-spot indicators in the exterior mirrors with camera images that appear in the driver display when the turn signal is activated.

Using both systems together provides useful information when changing lanes. Drivers receive the familiar warning in the mirror along with a wider camera view of the adjacent lane.

My concern is not the camera quality. It is the size and position of the driver display.

The R2’s driver display is relatively small, so the blind-spot image is smaller than what I am accustomed to seeing in our R1S.

Depending on the steering-wheel and seating positions, part of the display may also be obstructed.

This is particularly relevant for drivers with vision limitations, including me.

I would like Rivian to give owners the option to display the blind-spot camera on the larger center screen. Tesla uses the primary display for its blind-spot camera view, and my Chevrolet Silverado EV also presents a much larger image.

Rivian does not need to eliminate the driver-display view. Giving owners a choice between the driver display, center display, or both would make the system more accessible without removing the current functionality.

R2 Software and Rivian’s New Interface

The newer Rivian software was attractive and generally intuitive, although it took me some time to locate functions I had grown accustomed to using in our R1.

That does not necessarily mean the interface is harder to use.

Familiarity plays a major role in how quickly someone navigates a vehicle’s software. A new Rivian owner may find the R2 layout more natural because they are not comparing it with years of experience using an earlier design.

Animations were smooth, the screen responded well, and the interface maintained Rivian’s clean visual identity.

The incomplete features were the primary limitation. Pet Comfort, Rivian Assistant, and some other software functions were not fully available on this particular vehicle.

I would not make a long-term judgment about R2 software based on this early build.

The more important question will be how consistently Rivian delivers updates after customer vehicles enter widespread service.

Rivian Autonomy+ and Future LiDAR Hardware

The R2’s driver-assistance features operated similarly to those in our 2026 R1S.

Universal Hands-Free performed well during my drive and behaved largely as expected. It still requires the driver to remain attentive, and it does not stop or slow for traffic lights or stop signs.

That distinction is important.

Despite the Autonomy+ name, these remain driver-assistance systems rather than autonomous-driving features. The driver remains responsible for supervising and controlling the vehicle.

Rivian currently prices Autonomy+ at $2,500 as a one-time purchase or $49.99 per month. The R2 Performance Launch Package includes Autonomy+ for the supported life of the vehicle’s delivered hardware.

Rivian has also announced a third-generation autonomy computer built around its proprietary RAP1 silicon. The company says LiDAR integration will begin with future R2 models.

LiDAR uses laser-based sensing to produce detailed three-dimensional information about the environment around a vehicle. It can provide additional data and sensing redundancy alongside cameras and radar.

That does not mean the early R2 autonomy hardware will suddenly become useless.

Rivian continues developing capabilities for its current platform, and the existing system should remain useful for normal driver-assistance functions.

However, hardware cannot be delivered through a software update.

An early R2 owner should not assume the future computer or LiDAR sensor can simply be added later.

My Autonomy Hardware Recommendation

Planning to lease or own for two to three years: The current hardware should remain useful, and waiting may offer limited practical benefit.

Planning to own for seven to ten years: Consider waiting for more information about the next-generation hardware, especially if advanced driver assistance is important to you.

Not particularly interested in driver assistance: Choose based on price, configuration, range, and production maturity rather than LiDAR.

Early R2 Fit and Finish

The earlier R2 I examined in Maryland appeared to have excellent exterior fit and finish.

The Orlando vehicle had a few issues, although none prevented me from enjoying the drive.

The upper portion of the passenger-side rear door appeared slightly wavy. The exterior door handle on that door also did not fully present.

Rivian staff told me they were aware of the problem and had ordered replacement parts.

The presence of a known problem on a demo vehicle is not ideal, but I appreciated that the staff acknowledged it directly rather than attempting to dismiss it.

The variation between the Maryland and Orlando vehicles demonstrates why buyers should inspect an early-production R2 carefully before accepting delivery.

One excellent early vehicle does not prove every R2 will be perfect. One imperfect vehicle does not prove the entire production run has serious quality problems.

It does show that manufacturing consistency will be one of the most important areas to watch as Rivian increases production.

What I Would Inspect Before Accepting an Early R2

  • Alignment of all four doors
  • Exterior door-handle operation
  • Paint consistency and panel waviness
  • Weatherstripping around the doors and hatch
  • Front trunk operation
  • Rear hatch and drop-glass operation
  • Steering-wheel control operation
  • Seat movement, heating, and ventilation
  • Climate-control performance
  • Camera and driver-assistance warnings
  • Software features shown as unavailable or disabled
  • Wind noise, vibration, or suspension sounds during a test drive
  • Charging-port door operation
  • Interior trim alignment and rattles

The R2 Front Trunk

The R2 front trunk uses a capacitive button and power opening.

The system worked, but the front trunk on this particular vehicle seemed somewhat slow and did not appear to open quite as far as the earlier vehicle I examined in Maryland.

The R2 front trunk is not power closing. It must be closed manually.

It had recently rained, and the surface was wet. During my first attempt to close it, my hand slipped and the attached carabiner struck the ground.

This was not a mechanical failure. It highlighted a practical issue with maintaining a secure grip on the front trunk in wet conditions.

Rivian may be able to improve this through additional grip texture or a more clearly defined closing area.

A power-closing front trunk would be more convenient, but its absence is not a deal-breaker. It is one of the compromises Rivian appears to have made to control cost and complexity.

The Rear Hatch Is Useful, but Watch Your Head

I like that the R2 uses a conventional liftgate-style rear hatch. It creates a large opening and should make loading camping equipment, luggage, and larger items relatively easy.

The vehicle also offers a useful seating or loading ledge at the rear.

However, the R2’s roofline and open hatch position are fairly low. An adult sitting on the rear ledge or bumper may hit the hatch or roof area when leaning backward.

This is not a major defect, but it is worth remembering if you plan to sit at the back of the vehicle while changing shoes, preparing camping equipment, or sleeping inside the R2.

The R2 should make a capable camping vehicle, particularly because its interior can create a long, usable sleeping area.

Just remember to watch your head around the hatch opening.

The R2’s Biggest Practical Limitation: No Third Row

My previous concern regarding the lack of a third row remains.

Rivian designed the R2 as a five-passenger SUV. For many buyers, that will be completely adequate. The rear seat offers good passenger space, and the vehicle provides useful cargo capacity for its exterior size.

The problem is not that every buyer needs seven seats.

The problem is that the absence of even an occasional-use third row reduces flexibility in one of the most competitive parts of the electric vehicle market.

A small third row would not need to accommodate adults comfortably on long trips. Even children-only or occasional-use seating could help families transport an extra friend, grandparent, or child when needed.

Without that option, a buyer who needs more than five seats cannot simply choose another R2 configuration.

They have to leave the R2 lineup entirely and move to the larger and more expensive R1S or consider another brand.

Depending on configuration and local taxes, the cost difference between an R2 and R1S can approach $25,000 or more.

Some buyers cannot justify that difference. Others may be able to afford the R1S but simply do not want a vehicle that large.

Rivian R2 Versus Tesla Model Y

The Tesla Model Y is likely to be the R2’s most important direct competitor.

Tesla has several significant advantages. The Model Y is already produced at scale, has years of manufacturing refinement, offers strong efficiency, and benefits from Tesla’s mature charging and software ecosystem.

The R2 counters with a more adventurous personality, substantially greater ground clearance, a dedicated driver display, a more conventional interior layout, and greater emphasis on outdoor capability.

The Model Y is the more established and predictable purchase.

Tesla has had years to improve production efficiency, charging integration, and software. Depending on the configuration and available offers, it may also be the better financial value.

The R2 is the more distinctive choice.

It feels designed for someone who wants a compact electric SUV but does not want every road trip, campground, or parking lot to feel like another variation of the same experience.

I also like having a dedicated driver display. Tesla’s center-screen approach works for many owners, and I appreciate seeing important driving information directly in front of me.

Why the Tesla Model Y L Changes the R2 Comparison

The longer Tesla Model Y L creates an even more important comparison.

The Model Y L uses an extended wheelbase and provides three rows with six seats. That directly addresses the flexibility missing from the five-seat R2.

The Model Y L is approximately 195.6 inches long, compared with approximately 185.6 inches for the R2.

It is not simply a standard Model Y with two small seats added to the cargo area. Its extended body provides additional passenger and cargo room, although it is also less compact and maneuverable than the R2.

The R2 still has meaningful advantages.

It is approximately ten inches shorter, easier to place in tight spaces, and much more focused on unpaved-road and outdoor capability.

Still, families frequently make vehicle decisions based on the one capability they may occasionally need rather than the capabilities they use every day.

A buyer may only use a third row several times a month, but its availability can determine whether a vehicle remains on the shopping list.

That is where the R2 could lose buyers to the Model Y L.

Other Vehicles R2 Buyers May Consider

The R2 will also compete with five-passenger electric crossovers such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Chevrolet Blazer EV, Chevrolet Equinox EV, and other upcoming premium and adventure oriented EVs.

Those vehicles approach the market from different directions. Some prioritize value and efficiency, while others emphasize comfort, charging speed, conventional styling, or dealership availability.

The R2’s advantage is not that it automatically wins every specification comparison.

Its advantage is that it combines a manageable footprint with real ground clearance, strong performance, outdoor-oriented design, and a recognizable brand identity.

Should Rivian Offer More R2 Variants?

I think Rivian has room to expand the R2 lineup beyond differences in battery, motors, and interior equipment.

A slightly lower, road-focused R2 could appeal to buyers who primarily drive in cities and on highways. Reducing ride height and using road-optimized wheels and tires could improve aerodynamics, range, and handling without changing the fundamental design.

Rivian could also offer a more aggressive adventure version with additional underbody protection, specialized tires, and stronger off-road emphasis for buyers willing to accept reduced range.

The differences would not need to be as dramatic as those available within the larger R1 lineup.

Even modest differentiation would help Rivian appeal to customers with very different priorities.

What the R2 Performance Launch Package Includes

For a limited time, Rivian is including the Launch Package with qualifying R2 Performance vehicles.

  • You may encounter fit-and-finish inconsistencies.
  • Some software features may arrive after delivery.
  • Service centers will be learning how to diagnose and repair a new platform.
  • Lease pricing may include a substantial early-adopter premium.
  • The vehicle will not include Rivian’s future Gen 3 autonomy computer and LiDAR hardware.

My prediction is that the R2 Premium and Standard Long Range will eventually become the most popular configurations.

The Performance model is exciting, but many buyers do not need 656 horsepower or a 3.6-second 0-to-60 time.

The $44,990 Standard will attract attention because of its headline price. However, its estimated 275-mile range may be limiting for families that regularly take longer trips, travel in cold weather, or want additional charging flexibility.

A longer-range Standard should appeal to value-focused buyers who do not require the Premium interior or maximum performance.

The R2 Premium may become the overall sweet spot for buyers who want dual-motor all-wheel drive, a premium cabin, approximately 330 miles of range, and strong acceleration without paying for the Performance model.

Those versions may not generate the same launch excitement, but they are likely to align more closely with mainstream buyer priorities.

For our family, we will probably wait for the Standard Long Range or R2 Premium before making a final decision.

We do not need the maximum acceleration offered by the Performance model. Range, value, and long-term ownership costs are more important to us.

Waiting would also give Rivian additional time to refine production, stabilize the software, and provide more information about the timing of its next-generation autonomy hardware.

That does not mean I left the demo disappointed.

Quite the opposite!

Despite being an early-production vehicle on an early software build, the R2 felt solid, well designed, and surprisingly mature.

Its ride quality, comfort, and performance showed that Rivian understands what makes its vehicles special.

The R2 does not feel like a compromised budget Rivian. It feels like a smaller and more accessible interpretation of the same philosophy.

Final Verdict: Is the Rivian R2 Worth It?

The Rivian R2 is not perfect.

It lacks a third-row option, early vehicles may have production inconsistencies, some software features are still developing, and buyers must decide whether receiving the vehicle sooner is worth missing Rivian’s future LiDAR and Gen 3 autonomy hardware.

Those are legitimate concerns, especially in a category where the Tesla Model Y offers FSD Supervised, proven efficiency and scale, and the longer Model Y L adds the three-row flexibility the R2 lacks.

However, the R2 succeeds at something that is becoming increasingly difficult in the electric vehicle market:

It feels distinctive.

Rivian has not simply produced another anonymous electric crossover.

The R2 combines everyday usability with real ground clearance, outdoor capability, excellent road manners, and a recognizable personality.

I believe the vehicle itself is a winner.

Whether the R2 becomes a major commercial success will depend less on its fundamental design and more on Rivian’s ability to execute.

The company must build the vehicle consistently, provide reliable and timely service, control costs, and compete against manufacturers with much larger production volumes.

If Rivian can accomplish those things, the R2 has the potential to become one of the defining electric vehicles of this decade.

For buyers who want maximum performance, enjoy being early adopters, and are willing to be patient with occasional production or software issues, the R2 Performance Launch Package is compelling.

For buyers seeking the best combination of value, range, and long-term ownership confidence, waiting for the R2 Premium or Standard Long Range may be the smarter decision.

Either way, my demo drive left me more confident about the R2 as a vehicle.

Now Rivian has to prove that it can deliver the ownership experience to match it.

Based on my demo drive, the R2 is a well-designed and highly capable electric SUV. The Performance Launch Package makes the most sense for buyers who want maximum power and do not mind the risks associated with early production. Does the Rivian R2 have a third row?

No. The R2 is a five-passenger vehicle. Buyers who need more seating must consider the larger Rivian R1S, the six-seat Tesla Model Y L, or another three-row vehicle.
