Rivian Issues TSB for Squeaking Exterior Door Handles on R1T and R1S

Rivian has released technical service bulletin RSB-56-26-002-1 addressing squeaking exterior door handles on certain 2025-2026 Rivian R1T and R1S vehicles.

According to the bulletin, some vehicles built between April 2024 and September 2025 may develop squeaking noises when the exterior door handles present or retract. Rivian states that the issue does not affect the ability to open or close the doors.

What Rivian Says Causes the Issue

The bulletin explains that under some conditions, the exterior door handle assemblies can squeak during operation. To correct the issue, Rivian instructs service technicians to upgrade a pin inside all four exterior door handles and apply Krytox 205 grease to multiple moving components.

Affected Vehicles

  • 2025-2026 Rivian R1T
  • 2025-2026 Rivian R1S

Owners should contact Rivian service via the Rivian app or phone to confirm whether their specific VIN is affected.

What the Repair Involves

The service procedure is fairly involved and requires removal of all four exterior door handles. Rivian technicians then:

  • Remove and replace the handle effort pin
  • Install updated retaining clips
  • Transfer and reinstall internal spring components
  • Apply Krytox 205 grease to multiple highlighted wear/contact areas
  • Reassemble and test the handles

The bulletin also references additional procedures related to door trim panel noise and vibration.

Why This Matters

Flush electronic door handles have become increasingly common on EVs, but they also introduce additional moving parts and mechanisms compared to traditional mechanical handles. Service bulletins like this offer an interesting look at the kinds of real-world wear patterns and refinement updates manufacturers continue making after vehicles reach customers.

While the squeak itself appears cosmetic rather than functional, Rivian's repair procedure suggests the company identified a repeatable wear or friction point within the handle mechanism.
